XI International Conference of the Study Group on Eighteenth-Century Russia
10th-14th July 2023
Manfred Schruba (Università degli Studi di Milano, Italy), Монстры в народной картинке XVIII века
Monsters are a quite common motif in early modern European (German, French, English, Italian) popular prints. Some of them occur also in Russian eighteenth-century popular prints (lubok). Almost all of theses motifs have a West European provenance. The aim of the talk is to present an inventory of Russian popular print monsters, arranged in a typological order, and to indicate some parallels and direct Western models of the lubok monsters.
